Abstract

Youth participation is an important component of democratic life. Traditionally, political participation has included voting, political-party membership, election campaigning, public meetings, and civic organizations. Digital technologies have introduced new forms of engagement through social media, online communities, digital campaigns, video-sharing platforms, and messaging applications. This paper examines the changing nature of youth political participation in the digital age, with particular attention to India. It discusses digital information-seeking, political expression, content creation, online mobilization, institutional communication, and issue-based participation. Research indicates a generally positive association between social-media use and political participation, although the relationship varies according to context and methodology (Boulianne, 2015; Boulianne & Theocharis, 2020). Digital participation can complement conventional participation. At the same time, misinformation, polarization, digital inequality, algorithmic visibility, privacy concerns, and online harassment create significant challenges. The paper argues that digital participation becomes more meaningful when supported by political knowledge, digital literacy, critical evaluation of information, and connections between online and offline civic activity.
